A musical cabaret, #Respect, directed by veteran entertainer/choreographer Owen Lonzar, starring Black Yoghurt’s Donovan Yaards, Itu Tshabane and Sean McGrath is the festive season fare at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square until 14 December 2017.
Created as a positive response to #MenAreTrash, the show is entitled #Respect in solidarity with women everywhere. The boys of Black Yoghurt serenade the sisters of song, with some of the biggest female hits, in their new show. The show includes music from Whitney Houston, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Beyonce, Julie Andrews and Barbara Streisand. I find the concept of men respecting women a very attractive one, and as the boy band covers these songs as men, not drag items, one can’t help but warm to them and some of the best loved songs of modern times.
The South African divas are not left out of the line-up, and I particularly enjoyed a rather different take on Meadowlands.
Daphne Kuhn, the owner and artistic director/producer at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square usually does something light for the “silly season” and #Respect is no exception to this rule. The show is absolutely clean and suitable for any audience at all, and it is fluffy fun popular music which is sufficiently recognisable for anyone to be able to sing along.
Recommended for light-hearted viewing during the early part of the year end season.
On opening night Carolyn Steyn and her “knitwits” from 67 Blankets for Madiba were present. CEO Daphne Kuhn announced that the theatre will be making 67 tickets available to “knitwits” and supporters in return for one hand made blanket (or the wool for one blanket) per seat. Do come and support this wonderful initiative.
