The fourth work I saw at the 2017 So Solo Festival directed by Gita Pather was My Koek is Moeg.
This is a harrowing work looking at the life of one so called coloured person from a small place in Namibia and the abuse, sexual and physical, that is rained down on her between the ages of 15 and 21.
Written by Nashilongweshipwe Mushaanja, the script starts out light and gets darker. One is drawn in by a sterling performance by Abby Molz and one wants to intervene. Directed by Obett Motaung, the set and props are minimalist, but unnecessary to the drama unfolding on the stage.
Human resilience triumphs at the end leaving the audience marvelling at how our young heroine is coping, but also wishing they could step in and make things better.
My Koek is Moeg was seen at the So Solo Festival at Wits Theatre on 1 October. The festival runs until 8 October 2017. Booking at www.webtickets.co.za. Online tickets R75 and at the door R80.
Next up on 4 October 2017 is The Cursed Vagina and Tracks at 13:30 and 19:30 respectively.
