The international collaborative work choreographed and interpreted by Gaby Saranoufi (Madagascar), Desire Davids (South Africa) and Edna Jaime (Mocambique) was one of the great works to come out of the Dance Umbrella 2017.
A look a women, female sexuality and other matters, such as domesticity and our burden of housework, pertaining to women, it spoke to my heart. The artists’ statement says “It is a commentary on current issues facing women on the African continent.”
The sophistication which these three dancer/choreographers brought to the work shone out through a collections of ideas both sufficiently contained and thoroughly investigated. I was disappointed when it was over. It could have gone on.
Set and costume design was by Sara Machado, music by Nandele Maguni (composed for this work), lighting and technical design by Caldino Alberto, with Moeketsi Koena providing an outside eye.
