Joburg Ballet’s prima ballerina, Burnise Silvius, is retiring from performance after this season of La Traviata, a neo-classical ballet choreographed in 1990 for CAPAB by Veronica Paeper to the original opera score by Guiseppe Verdi as adapted by South African composer and conductor, Allan Stephenson.
Silvius will be dancing three of the ten performances as Camille. I understand that all these performances are already heavily booked so hurry if you want these. But there are seats available for the other performances. Opening night is Friday 31 March 7.30pm with Shannon Glover as Camille – our heroine – a former prostitute, Juan Carlos Osma as Armand – her suitor, and Michael Revie as Germont – Armand’s father. The last time La Traviata was performed by Joburg Ballet was in 2008. Dayana Acuna and Claudia Monja will also be dancing the role of Camilla during the season.

Joburg Ballet offers performances for as little as R80 for their midweek morning performances which are always filled with retired people enjoying the ballet. Parking is always at a premium for these morning performances.
Burnise Silvius is a stunning dancer with a devoted following and she will be missed on stage. I understand that Silvius will be marrying in the near future and I take this opportunity to wish her well in her new endeavours.
In the meantime, Johannesburg ballet lovers can rest assured that Joburg Ballet will be presenting new seasons with new and exciting young dancers, as well as veteran principals like the lovely Shannon Glover.
