Don Giovanni, live at the Brooklyn Theatre

I attended the Salon Music Don Giovanni at the Brooklyn Theatre as part of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival 2017 season.  What a lovely production!

The score has been arranged for a small ensemble so as to make it an affordable outing

The Brooklyn Theatre Salon Ensemble consists of Johan Ferreira – Oboe, Natali Schutte – Violin. Ken Craig – Viola, Jurgens De Lange – Double Bass, Christopher Evans – Violin,
Laetitia Orlandi – Piano with Jaco van Staden – Conductor.  They were all dressed in 18th century period costume and looked lovely.  The arrangement was attractive and the playing excellent.

The title role is sung by Raimondo Viviano van Staden who has a beautiful voice and sang with sure charm, with the Il Commendatore being sung by Dirk Venter.  Donna Anna is Ilze Coetzee and she was superb. Don Ottavio is Arthur Swan and his Il mio tesore was wonderful. Donna Elvira is Linelle Wimbles Engelbrecht – and she is also a very fine soprano.  Leporello is sung by Thabang Senekal.  Zerlina is Dierdre van Schalkwyk and Masetto is Lourens de Jager.

All round this is delightful production.

This opened on the 18th January with subsequent performances on 2o, 22, 25, 27 and 29 January at the Brooklyn Theatre and on 28 January at the Nirox Sculpture Garden in the Cradle of Humankin.  I saw it on the 20th and will be going again to hear it sung outdoors.  This is conducted by Jaco van Staden and beautifully directed by Sandra Laubscher.   Booking for this charming opera is at http://www.brooklyntheatre.co.za or 012 460 6033.  Prices from R100 for scholars to R330 for adults.  For bookings for the Nirox event 083 600 2280,  tammy@niroxarts.com or info@niroxarts.com.
