The sixty sixth Miss World “Beauty with a Purpose” pageant 2016 will be held in Washington DC in late November and the first half of December.
Miss South Africa, the lovely 24 year old Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, unveiled her national costume at The Maslow Hotel on 16 November 2016. A school teacher with an honours degree in education from Wits University, Miss South Africa is involved with the Cell C “Take a Girl Child to Work Day”.
The evening gowns of the contestants is apparently a contractual secret, never revealed before the final contest, this year on 18 December, itself. It is on that evening that the current Miss World, the former Miss Spain, Mireia Lalaguna, will hand her successor the crown.
All Miss South Africa’s costumes are designed by JJ Schoeman (a past Miss World judge), and have been for the past seven years. The national costume itself is judged each year, and JJ Schoeman’s creations have been awarded second place before and he has dressed Miss World both when Rolene Strauss won that title and when the contest was held in South Africa in 2008.
The national costume is a yellow orange affair based on the rising sun in Mpumalanga, home of this year’s South African representative to the contest. It has gold and jewels worked into it to represent the mineral wealth of the country. There are several other costumes involved as well, including the ball gown, an interview suit, a Designer dress and more. They are all Afrocentric in design and make use of bright colours.
The finals of the contest are watched by more than one-billion people world wide. One hundred and twenty countries will be represented.
I take this opportunity to wish Miss South Africa 2016 all the best as she represents us in this event. Should she not place in the Top 5 at Miss World, Kunene will also represent South Africa at the 2016 Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Manila, Philippines, in January 2017. The last Miss South Africa to compete in both the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants was Miss South Africa 2013 Marilyn Ramos.
The 2017 Miss South Africa Pageant will be staged by licence holders Sun International, in association with Cell C, in March next year.
