Dr Strange, movie review

Doctor Strange is a 2016 American superhero movie.  Based on the Dr Strange Marvel comics created back in 1963 by Marvel legends Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, it is directed by Scott Derrickson. Music is by Michael Giacchino and Pink Floyd fans should listen out for an early Pink Floyd number.

The movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Stephen Strange (an arrogant neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands in a motor vehicle accident), Chiwetel Eijofor as Karl Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong as Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, Benjamin Bratt as Jonathan Pangborn, Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One.

It is a rattlingly good story with a plot that doesn’t annoy (bearing in mind it is fantasy) with wonderful visual effects. The Cloak of Levitation gives him the ability to fly.  The Eye of Agamotto, well, you will see what that enables him to do.   I saw it in 3D and the movie lends itself to dimensional play.  There are some very surreal scene with building folding up.  The fight scenes are beautifully choreographed.

Filmed mainly in Katmandu, Nepal, where most of it is set, I found the temples beautiful and the Everest eerily beautiful. There are also scene set in New York and London and these were filmed in the USA and UK respectively. The Hong Kong scene was filmed in Hong Kong.

If one likes the genre, one will probably like this highy entertaining movie.
