Chanje Kunda is a poet and an actress. This is a work written and performed by Kunda which lays her soul bare regarding one small, but important, episode in her life. Directed by Juliet Ellis, I found it a little fussy in its set (a clever set, by the way, with a slant that indicates its personal bias most distinctly) and and choreography, but the whole is powerful and moving.
The art[st is talented and has created a wonderful work. The 969 Festival curator, Gita Pather, has an innate ability to pick out quality from the National Arts Festival programme and this was certainly a stunning work.
Based on a true story, the audience was empathetic throughout and the emotion of the performance piece together with the response from the audience was heart warming.
The Wits 969 Festival runs from 13-24 July 2016 at the Wits Theatre, Braamfontein.
