Every adult outside of the UK remembers ABC books which focused on things English. A is for apple, b is for Buckingham Palace etc. It is actually very alienating for children who have no cultural links with England and have never visited it – ok, I found it alienating as a child, although I only realised it when I visited London for the first time as an adult and so many childhood reads leapt to life.
At last we have a South African ABC, Discover South Africa from Aardvark to Zululand. Each letter of the alphabet gives several options. On each double page is a quiz question (with answers at the back). Also at the back is a parents guide to places and a South African terminology glossary.
This is magnificently illustrated by Sandy Lightley. I was enchanted by the clear, bright and lovely drawings which accompany all the words. The range of words include animals, places, even people (only Madiba and Tutu), and a good general knowledge will be built as one of the positive outcomes of children reading this book.
This will make a fabulous book for little ones who are due to start school soon and should give them hours of wonderful reading pleasure as their learn their ABCs and about the country.
There is a companion volume on Cape Town but the South African one looks at, and has tourist contact details for, Addo Elephant National Park, Agulhas, Arniston, Big Hole, Blue Train, Cango Caves, Drakensberg, Gold Reef City, Hermanus, Horseshoe Falls, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Jock of the Bushveld, Karoo, Kyalami, Kruger National Park, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, Lost City, Namaqualand, Orange River, Plettenberg Bay, Paarl Rock, Pilgrim’s Rest, Qunu, Robben Island, Tugela Falls, Union Buildings, Voortrekker Monument and Vredefort Dome.
Aimed at tourists and locals alike, this vibrant book will delight and inform.
