The opening work for the 2015 Dance Umbrella is the international premiere of On Fire: The Invention of Tradition choreographed by Argentinian born Constanza Macras at the Dance Factory on Thursday 26 February and Friday 27 February, both at 19:00. The work deals with the evaluation of heritage and tradition, segregated cultural groups, and new self-defined contemporary practices and rituals in urban life.
The much awarded Macras is now based in Berlin and for this piece she works with a cast of South African and Berlin-based performers in collaboration with the Johannesburg-based photographer Ayana V. Jackson. Her company, Dorkypark, integrates dancers, actors and musicians with performers that range from 4 to 72 years old, combining text, live music, dance and video.
A production by Constanza Macras | Dorkypark in collaboration with Ayana V Jackson. Funded by Kulturstiftung des Bundes. A co-production with Dance Umbrella South Africa and Senatskanzlei für Kulturelle Angelegenheiten – der Regierende Bürgermeister Berlin and with friendly support of Rudolf Augstein Stiftung, Goethe-Institut Südafrika, Dance Forum Johannesburg and Momo Gallery.
