Beauty and the Beast at People’s Theatre

Beauty and the Beast 1

As incredible as it seems the Christmas season theatre has begun.

The People’s Theatre, Joburg Theatre Complex, is producing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR this year.  I went along yesterday with friends and their son.  A good time was had by all.

It is being directed by Jill Girard and Keith Smith with Musical Direction by Rowen Bakker.  On the day I found the volume of music overpowered the volume of the voices, particularly the voice of Sarah Malherbe who played Belle.

The set by Grant Knottenbelt is wonderful and he also did the lighting.  The beautiful costumes were by Linda Wilson.

The professional actors included Samantha Jacobs, Alex Marais, Evan Williams, Blessing Xaba, Jaydene Marais, Ntsebo Lerotholi and Stefan Carstens as the Beast/Prince.  A special mention must be made of Gaston played by Sean McGrath.  He has a particularly fine singing voice.

There were a lot of children in the cast and they were superb.  Not sure who played for the performance I saw, but they were wonderful.  Lesidi Mpshe, Jude du Preez, Leruo Mpshe, Amy Oberholzer, Sabrina Molitano, Mpumi Mothibedi, Roshnee Mansingh, Angelina Seymour, Nikita White, Charly White, Lisa de Wet, Kian du Preez.  I am impressed with your skills and talents and hard work.

Beauty and the Beast 2

Lots of fun for the little ones.  See it at The People’s Theatre, Joburg Theatre Complex between now and 24 December 2014.
