Esme Euvrard Forces Favourites

There are probably few people of my generation who don’t remember Esmé Euvrard’s voice.  She was an actress who worked on several Afrikaans films as well as South Africa’s first Afrikaans radio serial on Springbok radio, Liefdeslied, which ran from 1953 until 1959. It co-starred Esme Euvrard and Jan Cronje. I was too young to remembera radio presenter in the sixties and seventies, the heyday of South African radio.  Forces Favourites and So Maak Mens were two of the programmes I particularly remember.  The latter was co-presented by Jan Cronje.

She was married to Gilberto Bonegio, a Portuguese flamenco dancer and guitarist and their descendants still dominate the South African Spanish dance community. She was one of the South African women who have been privileged to have a rose named after her.

I have very little information on Esmé Euvrard but if people care to provide me better details I will very happily update this blog entry with their information and credit them with having provided it.

This is another in my series of Women’s Month blog posts which I originally started in 2013. The intention then was to do one per day, but real life got in the way and I did far fewer than that, giving me the opportunity to expand the project into an annual event.
