Vuyani Dance Theatre is repositioning itself with a new name, Vuyani Dance Company. Started by Gregory Vuyani Maqoma, this fifteen year old dance company is presenting a new work, Full Moon, at the Joburg Theatre for a run from 29 April 2014 to 11 May 2014 in The Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre. The South African National Youth Orchestra will be playing for this season.
There have been various activities ancillary to this initiative, including conversations with the The Ar(t)chive in which this pioneering dancer-choreographer and director discusses the complexities of a production of such magnitude with an emphasis on collaboration which is one of the Vuyani signatures.
The Ar(t)chive is the first comprehensive contemporary dance archive of its kind in South Africa and on the continent. This project is managed by filmmaker and Wits Masters graduate Jessica Denyschen in tandem with theatre journalist and dance writer Adrienne Sichel as resident researcher and consultant. The Ar(t)chive endeavors to bring together various strands of this living heritage in a physical and virtual memory bank. The Ar(t)chive is proudly supported by SPARC and WITS School of Arts.
I will be at the opening of Full Moon on 29 April 2014 and will report back on that in due course.
