I was in my favourite German bakery, Black Forest Bakery, in Braamfontein, close to where I work. On the counter were round “cakes” or loaves of bread. I read the label.
I bought one. R60.
I researched them on the internet. They are simply sweetish breads which are taken to church on Easter Saturday to be blessed by the priest and then eaten on Easter Sunday morning when the Lenten fast is broken. I noticed the cross cut into the bread before it was baked.
I had some of mine this morning. It is fairly dry but tasty. It did need a drink of coffee or hot chocolate with it – and I put butter on the slices! I will doubtless have some more this evening. The rest will make delicious bread and butter pudding. With custard.
