The other day I went to the South African premiere of One Chance, a movie about the life of Paul Potts. Who? Paul Potts is a British tenor who won the first series of Britain’s Got Talent when he sang Nessun dorma from Puccini’s Turandot. Before winning that contest, Potts , the son of a bus driver and supermarket cashier, was an amateur opera singer who was, despite an Honours degree in the Humanities, a mobile telephone salesperson by day.
Directed by David Frankel and starring James Corden as Paul Potts, together with Colm Meaney, Mackenzie Crook, Julie Walters, Jemima Rooper and Alexandra Roach, One Chance had its South African premiere on Thursday 10 April 2014. Paul Potts sang Nessum Dorma for South African audiences before giving them a motivational speech as a prelude to the screening.
David Frankel directed The Devil Wears Prada. One Chance is the inspirational true story of Paul Potts, a shy, bullied shop assistant by day and an amateur opera singer by night. Paul became an instant YouTube phenomenon after being chosen by Simon Cowell for ‘Britain’s Got Talent.’ Paul went on to win the competition, and the hearts of millions.
The movie is now on circuit.
