The best and worst South African movies of 2013

There were apparently 67 South African movies released to the big screen in South Africa. I saw thirteen of them. (Well, I saw a few more but some are only being released in 2014 and some of them were festival movies). I attended the Jozi Film Festival and saw the South African Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Out in Africa, movies.

The three best were in descending order, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (biographical/history), Orania (documentary) and Khumba (animated). It will be interesting to watch what happens to Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom at the various international awards ceremonies.

Mandela

The worst of these was easily 100 Meter Leeuloop (Afrikaans comedy) followed by To the Power of Anne (mockumentary).

Looking forward to 2014, we have a strong contender for the Academy Awards Foreign Film in Four Corners. This is a movie worth watching.
