Secret with the Moon

One of the works I did manage to see at Drama for Life’s Sex Actually Festival was Secret with the Moon.

Myesha Jenkins

This is a poetry performance by five women.  They start out knitting.  Their wool is all different colours and the threads are tangled.  I found this symbolic.  They chat to the audience about sexual matters before the work officially begins.  Usually quite a few drinks are needed before women open up the way the audience did on the night I was there.

The poetry recited or read by Thandokuhle Mngqibisa, Phillippa Yaa de Villiers, Vangi Gantsho, Myesha Jenkins and Sarah Godsell moves from pretty and romantic through to passionate and raw and finally explores matters of abuse. Some of it is amusing, some of it is sad, some makes me angry.

The work was performed in the Wits Amphitheatre as part of the DFL Sex Actually Festival in August 2013.
