Petronel Malan plays for the Johannesburg Musical Society

What a fabulous recital I attended on 27  July 2013 at the Linder Auditorium.

Petronel Malan

Petronel Malan is a USA based pianist born in South Africa.  She has a devoted following in South Africa, not because she is South African, but because she is a wonderful pianist.

She played Haydn’s Sonata in A Flat Major, Hob XVI:46, Schumann’s Etudes Symphoniques, Opus 13, A transcription of four works by Ignaz Friedman entitled Four Transcriptions and a Transcription of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No 19, S.244. by Ferruccio Busoni, but further transcribed by Malan.

For those who missed the concert, there is a recording of Malan playing the Haydn Sonata in A Flat Major, Hob XVI:46 on YouTube which gives one an idea of what a treat the audience was able to enjoy at the Johannesburg Musical Society Concert.

Malan is a critically acclaimed and much awarded pianist and she was certainly superb on the day.  It is easy to see why she is so much favoured in the country of her birth.

The next concert of the Johannesburg Musical Society will be on 24 August and will feature Sergei Malov (violin, viola and violincello da spalla) accompanied by Bryan Wallick.  The following concert will feature the Charl Du Plessis Trio and is entitled Baroque to Beyond.
